Aegis Training Services has now been approved to deliver the new TLI10 Training Package. New courses begin 30th May 2011.

Added March 2011

The Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council has released the new TLI10 Training Package. This includes upgrades to the current courses in Driving Instruction. Aegis Training Services has already taken steps to be approved to deliver the new courses and will be out shortly.

Many people are confused in relation to the need to upgrade their current trainer qualifications. Those that hold a current TAA40104 Certificavte IV in Training & Assessment do NOT need to upgrade to the new TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.

Those that hold the older BSZ40198 Certificate IV in Workplace Traning & Assessment however will need to do the upgade prior to the end of the year.

Check out our sister site http://www.aegis.edu.au for special pricing on upgrades.

Become a Driving Instructor

Certificate IV in Driver Instruction is a minimum requirement that must be completed to become an Instructor/Trainer in Australia. We are proud to be able to deliver these courses to our customers.

There are three separate streams for driving instruction Car, Heavy Vehicle and Motorcycle, More information regarding each stream is listed below.

The Approved Driving Instructors Course is available at Aegis Training Services P/L. The Driving Instruction course is a 2 week course and can be combined with the TAE Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification as well if you wish. This is necessary if completing the Motorcycle qualification (TLI41410) and HIGHLY recommended if doing the Heavy Vehicle (TLI41310) up to HC Class, and required for MC Class, as most states now require both and it will be a requirement in all states in the near future. The TAE qualification is not required for Car in QLD at this stage and there is no immediate plan for it to be a requirement in the near future, but many states do require you to hold both so please contact us to discuss your requirements.

The new Driver Instruction course is set out with 11 core units (which is the full qualification) and in addition to this there is 2 optional assessment units from the TAA40104 Certificate Iv in Training and Assessment or TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualifications for those wishing to work in states with assessment completed by the Trainer, for example in Queensland the Q-RIDE motorcycle system, South Australia Licensing system and NSW heavy Vehicle system. Aegis Training Services P/L also provides the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification so we can offer the option of completing these units at the same time as completing the TLI41210 Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics Driving Instruction (Car) TLI41310 Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics Driving Instruction (Heavy Vehicle) & the TLI41410 Certificate IV in Transport & Logistics Motorcycle Riding Instruction qualifications.

The course is made up of a group of Units and is designed to be able to completed in the sections you require for the class of vehicle training desired. After completing the course and being issued the certificate you can start your new career as an Instructor (After being issued an Instructor Licence from the Dept of Transport/ Local Road Authority {Application form, Criminal History check needs to be completed prior to the issue of the Instructor Licence}) Click Here for the QLD Info on how to become a Driver Trainer.

What other costs can I expect to have & Do I need anything else.

Car Driving Instructor

The Course

The first step is to do you course and gain the qualification, this will cost you $2500.00 and take nearly 2 weeks. If you are just doing this qualification you will need to be here for 3 days in the first week followed by a minimum of 4 days in the second week. The first week is related to the theory related to training and the second week is the practical sections where we will spend most of our time on road.

Your Driving Skills

You will be required to show that your driving is to a standard that will be consistent with passing a driving assessment at licence level (at least to the standard expected of a new driver). Most people can do this if they apply themselves. Almost everyone has some bad habits that they accumulate over time and this will not be an issue with you completing the course on time, but if during the drive a lack of skill or application of the driving legislation is an issue ( or in fact dangerous driving) then consideration will need to be given to possibly undergoing some driving lessons, and this could involve an added (small) cost to the course.

Although this is not common, as most people who come on the course are better than average drivers anyhow simply because they are interested in road safety, it does from time to time occur. Remember this course is not to teach people how to drive but rather how to teach driving.

The Car

You will also need to consider what type of car you will need to purchase and have it fitted with dual controls. We recommend and use Peter at Dual Controls QLD at Meadowbrook QLD (PH: 32004707) most Driver Trainers prefer this system. Please give Peter a call prior to purchasing a vehicle as some cars can not have a Dual system installed and he will be able to advise you before you buy. It could be a costly exercise to by a car and then find out you can't use it. The cost of fitting controls can vary and it is advisable to call Peter but on average you will need to allow around $1200.00 for this part.

There is no right and wrong (apart from the above) as to what car to by, but you might want to consider the following.

  1. Initial cost (would suggest keeping it under $20,000.00)
  2. Parts availability. (Some European cars you can wait for months for parts)
  3. Cost of Parts
  4. Comfort (remember to check the passenger side you will be spending most of your time there)
  5. Leg room after fitting the controls
  6. Size (to large a car can be very intimidating for a learner)
  7. Fuel economy
  8. Insurance costs (Joining the association can help greatly with this)

The business

You also need to consider how to set up your business. This will depend greatly on if you decide to start your own school or work for an established school. Even if you are working for another school in almost every case you still have your own business and work on a sub-contract basis for the school, so you will need an ABN. You can apply for an ABN on line with the tax office, https://abr.gov.au/ .Both systems have advantages and disadvantages, we suggest you discuss with your accountant the best way for you to set up your business to get the best advantage for you. We do suggest however that if you have not run a small business before you do consider all the difficulties you may encounter and discuss these with your accountant or someone in the industry, or alternatively consider working for a school even for a short time to become familiar with the industry.

Working with Children

For car instructors you will be predominately working with people under the age of 18 and at this age they are still considered a minor in Australia. Because of this you will also need to get a Working with Children Blue Card. You can apply for these at the commission for children and young people available on the following link http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/index.aspx. The cost for this card is minimal (around $60.00)

The Licence

You will need to hold the Driving Instructors Licence issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/. To get this licence you will need to complete your course then take that application into TMR with a completed application form (Download here or at our office). After this application is submitted it can take up to 4-6 weeks for the checks to be completed and the licence can be issued (average time appears to be 2 weeks but can not be guaranteed). It is recommended that this application be presented prior to starting the course, but some customer services centres will not accept it without the certificate. The cost for this application is around the $220.00 area and is inclusive of the issue of the licence. The application once approved is valid for 3 months so if you do put in the application prior to enrolment in the course and for some reason have not gone to pick it up within the 3 months you will be required to reapply with another fee due.
